Fisher’s Gardens

St. Rt. 256 between Main St. & Livingston Ave. Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068 614-861-5700

  1. 1. Plant spring flowering bulbs.  Everyone thinks of tulips and daffodils, but don’t forget hyacinths, crocus’, and muscari.  After the long, cold winter you’ll be rewarded with a riot of color in the spring.

  2. 2.Clean up all the dead leaves, blooms, branches, and weeds from your flower gardens.  If there’s no debris, there will be less chance for pests next year.  Dispose of diseased leaves and branches in the trash, not your compost pile (especially weeds).  But leave the seed heads on the coneflowers for the birds ~ they’ll thank you for it.

  3. 3.Apply corn gluten to your gardens now to prevent weeds next spring.  Be sure to water it in for best results.  (Preen brand is a pre-emergent weed preventer made with organic corn gluten.)  As with most organic measures in gardening the rule is “start early and stay late” as organics don’t have that punch chemical weed preventers do!

  4. 4.Start a windowsill garden or a terrarium.  Extend your gardening season by bringing it indoors!  Most houseplants don’t need much light and even a small table of African Violets is a welcome sight in the wintertime!  Read more about houseplants...

  5. 5.Leave some winter interest in your gardens with garden sculptures, arbors, trellis’, obelisks, sundials, chimes, or decorative garden stakes.  Anything that won’t freeze and crack (like your beautiful glazed pots or birdbaths) will give visual interest on those gray or snowy winter Ohio days.

  6. 6.Plant some winter interest in your gardens.  Ornamental grasses, coral bells, lavender, evergreeens, boxwoods, azaleas, and pansies all look great even during the winter.   Read more about winter interest plants...
